What determines how well you’re character gets along with your comrades the kind of character you have created. Your party members are your life blood, treat them well. The overhead maps, all the character screens, and most importantly, the user interface itself are amazingly well crafted. Spell effects are detailed; from the glowing blaze of a magic missile spell to the writhing tendrils of an entangle spell and even have different sound effects that go with them. Artistic details are also evident in every aspect of the title from glowing red frames to the darkening of the sky at sunset to the way an enemy explodes when damaged far beyond the hit-point or even catches on fire when hit by flames.
In some ways BG is like Diablo. Select the party leader and a formation type and just click wherever you want the group to go. The difference is that action stops in Baldur’s Gate when you mash down the space bar which pauses the game. Once paused, you have the time to tell each of your characters what you want them to do in the combat. To resume play you click the space bar again. Also in pause mode, all the option screens (spellbooks, character profiles, etc.) are available to you with one exception; when accessing the inventory screen, the game reverts back to real-time which means that you can’t easily change a character’s weapons once a battle begin, This is actually a very effective way to make the danger of switching weapons in combat more real.
Fighting in Baldur’s Gate is more a strategy than any other RPG game I have played. Quick reflexes won’t do a thing for you, instead, learn the power of the pause key. The technique of pausing, issuing commands to party members, and unpausing before a battle takes a certain strategy since accessing the inventory screen resumes game play during battle . Pausing gives you time to cast spells, move your people, and select how you want to fight. Plus, monsters are actually smart in this game. If they feel they are getting defeated, they will break off the attack, regroup, and attack you again. The enemy AI in this game has to be one of the best of its time.
This is a game that I’ve enjoyed countless hours of enjoyment playing into the wee hours of the night.
